FREEDOM IN THE SPIRIT (Romans 8: 1-4)
FREEDOM IN THE
SPIRIT (Romans
8: 1-4)
There
is not a single human being in this world who wants to be enslaved! Let not be
enslaved, detained for the whole day no one will. Everyone must want to be
free, independent and have the opportunity to do what he wants and what he
likes. True, we are free human beings, free people are not colonies. However,
behind it all, in fact man is a person who is not free, the enslaved. When I
say this, surely you mostly disagree! Surely lots of say, enslaved what? I am
free! I am a boss not an employee! I have all my treasures and expensive
things! Or even some say, "I live in a country that is never colonized and
even colonize another country!"
However,
in fact we are all "slaves" or clearly "enslaved!" What is
enslaved? Enslaved by SIN! A concrete example that man is enslaved to sin is: a
worker who always wants to gain high office. To achieve this expectation, all
his efforts, whether it be nice in front of superiors, cheating and even doing
bribery. This is evidence of slavery. Why? He is willing to do everything for
his wishes. He is enslaved by his will! Another example is a father who is
always drunk, ranging from morning until morning always in the tuak shop, came home to bring only noise
and drunkenness. This is also an example of slavery, he is enslaved by his
lusts. Even because of this, he forgot to do his responsibilities as a
"father." Another example is a crazy young man with a mobile phone.
Can not do anything without the mobile phone, the church see the phone, again
the status update alliance, even to not be able to sleep because of the phone.
Just wake up, just open the eyes, see the phone. This is also slavery.
Have
we ever realized this ??? those of us who feel freely unknowingly are actually
the most enslaved. The most horrible thing of slavery is when we are not aware,
that we are enslaved. For, if we are not conscious, then we will not find a way
out to be free from slavery! Well, after we realize, what things we need to do
to solve this? Let's learn the Word of God. What does the Lord teach us to get
out of this chain of slavery!
Today,
we will learn from the written Word of God from Romans, Romans 8: 1-4. The
theme for us today is "Freedom in the Spirit." This Word of God will
teach us, what true freedom is! This passage, will be divided into several
parts:
1.
The meaning of "Spirit" in the Word of God
The
Spirit in question is the Holy Spirit that is given to every believer. It is
the Spirit who will lead everyone who accepts Jesus as Lord and Savior. It is
the Spirit who gives repentance to the sinful man so that the sinful man is
aware of his sins and turns to God. In verse 1, we can see firmly and clearly
that, "whoever is in Christ is no longer punished, having believed and
Jesus Christ has given salvation so that punishment no longer befalls the
human."
2.
The Role of the Holy Spirit for Believers
The
Word of God in this passage explains that the role of the Spirit is to set free
in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. We know that these two things
namely "sin" and "death" are the greatest problems for
humans that are so difficult to solve. Someone could have killed his brother
for money! It's a sin for money love! A person can be difficult not to mata keranjang, not to be obscene and to
be faithful. It is also the result of the sin of fornication. One can not live
without a talisman, ilmu kebal,
without quarreling, it is also the result of a binding sin. End of it all what?
Eternal death! Death! (Romans 6:23). This is proof if sin is hard to remove,
inevitably, keeps on sinning. The desire of the heart to do the spiritual, but
instead do evil, even do what is not desired, this is the slavery that chains
us all sinners. However, the Word of God says that the Holy Spirit is able to
deliver us from the slavery of sin even from the sting of death and it is all
in Jesus Christ. Is not this a very happy news?
3.
God Himself took the initiative to do it
Surely
the question arises, why through our Spirit can be freed? The answer is because
God Himself did it. God Himself who guarantees! It is written in verse 3. God
Himself did it! When the Law was not possible to deliver us from slavery, God
was able to do so. By sending His Son into the flesh (human) so that the demand
is fulfilled in Jesus who has been incarnate into a human being. so all the
curses of sin, death, ordinances and laws have been destroyed in Jesus Christ
when He was crucified. On the cross itself, He nails and disables the curse of
sin and death. So, after Jesus Christ died, all the curses are also dead! And
as the Lord Jesus rose, death was overcome. So when Jesus overcame all the
curses and slavery that everyone who believes in him is liberated!
Therefore,
the thing we need to remember is, the Law, the rules of religion, the rules can
not save us. However, it actually makes us enslaved. This is the reason, God
saves us and frees us in Jesus Christ, because we can not liberate and save
ourselves. We can not be free because of our own efforts.
After
we believe in the Lord Jesus and believe in Him, He will grant us the liberating
Spirit. The Holy Spirit not only frees every believer, with the Holy Spirit, we
can also understand the will of God, with the Holy Spirit, we are able to
resist sin and its will. With the Holy Spirit, our lives are guided and the
Holy Spirit also helps us to pray to God with an unspoken complaint (Romans
8:26). Even with the Holy Spirit, we are convinced that we are God's children
so we credibly call the Creator, "Father" and we are also called
heirs (Rom 8: 15-17).
So,
truly free people are the people who have lived in Jesus Christ and the person
whose life is led by the Holy Spirit. Remember the brothers, the Holy Spirit,
not the other spirit, Tondi Parbadia is not tondi parbadai. Therefore, let us
live in the Spirit and live free in the Spirit because God has set us free in
Jesus Christ. Thus, we are no longer slaves to sin but free people in Jesus.
That is the Word of God. Blessed be God for His Word. Amen.
